What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is one of the five requirements (pillars) of Islam. During each of its 30 days, Muslims are obligated to fast from dawn until sunset. During this time, they are supposed to abstain from food, drinking liquids, smoking, and sexual relations.

In Morocco, women typically spend the afternoons shopping for and preparing for the night time meals. At sunset, families often gather to break the fast together. Traditionally the families break the fast with a drink of milk, three dried date fruits, and a tomato based soup called “Harira”. Later in the evening more substantial food will be served such as the traditional Moroccan Tagine. People spend their evenings watching special religious Ramadan TV series, praying at the mosque, strolling main gathering points of town or men sit to have a coffee and a cigarette with friends until late into the night.

Many Moroccans become more serious about religion during the month of Ramadan. Many attend the 5 times a day call to prayer and do the other ritual prayers. Many put away sinful habits or even change their outward attire by wearing the traditional religious robes during this month. Some even read the entire Quran (about a tenth the length of the Bible). This time of seeking makes it a strategic time for us to pray for them as they pursue the favor of Allah (God) in hope of receiving his mercy and forgiveness.
